The questions can be asked independently. A person can relinquish an object without changing their outlook. A transformation can occur without a deliberate offering. Someone can surrender a demand while retaining responsibility for the next action.

== Death becoming nourishment ==
Among Campbell's examples is a retelling involving Hina, an eel that becomes a lover, and a coconut tree growing from a buried head. He places it alongside other stories connecting death with the appearance of food.<ref name="pom4" /> This page refers to Campbell's selected retelling, not to a single version shared by every Polynesian tradition.

The narrative joins what would otherwise be opposed positions: the one who dies becomes a source of sustenance for others. Burial is therefore more than removal from sight. It marks a change in the form through which a relationship continues.

For close reading, the identities and sequence matter. Who requests the action? Who carries it out? Does the story present a gift, a betrayal, an accident or an imposed death? Do those who benefit know where their nourishment came from? Similar images can support different moral relationships when these details change.

== The seed as an image of continuity ==
A seed placed below the surface offers a compact image for something disappearing before another form appears. Its usefulness depends on continuity: the later growth is related to what was planted.

When this image is applied to a human loss, an important difference appears. The growth of a suitable seed under suitable conditions supplies a relatively familiar sequence. The consequences of a human loss are less determinate. The metaphor can express hope or retrospective meaning without guaranteeing what follows.

An invented example makes the distinction clear. “I buried that ambition so another could grow” describes a person's interpretation of a change. It does not establish that abandoning the first ambition caused the second to succeed. The account still needs the intervening activities, opportunities and decisions.

== Relinquishing an identity ==
Some transformations concern a role or self-description. A person may cease to be a novice, relinquish a position of authority or revise a long-standing account of what they are capable of doing. The language of death and rebirth can give such changes a dramatic shape.

That shape can illuminate the depth of a transition, while also concealing partial continuities. A former role may leave skills, relationships and obligations that remain relevant. A change does not need to erase the past completely to be consequential.

[[Rites of Passage, Liminality and Thresholds]] provides a more specific vocabulary for changes of status. It distinguishes separation, an interval of transition, and incorporation into a recognised position. This helps identify what has actually changed when a narrative announces a new beginning.

== Who bears the cost? ==
The grammar of sacrifice can make agency disappear. “A sacrifice was necessary” leaves the decision-maker unnamed. “The group asked one member to give up their place” identifies both the beneficiary and the person carrying the loss.

A careful interpretation restores these positions. Voluntary renunciation, coercion and retrospective acceptance are not the same event. Nor does a beneficial outcome retrospectively establish the consent of the person who paid the cost.

This is particularly important when a story is used to interpret an institution, family or community. A heroic account told by those who benefit may differ from the account of those whose opportunities were surrendered.

== Transformation without a guaranteed reward ==
Campbell's treatment of myth encourages reflection on participation in a world that includes change and mortality.<ref name="pom4" /> Reading this as a promise that every loss brings compensation would turn an interpretive perspective into a prediction it cannot support.

An account can acknowledge a painful or irreversible loss while also describing later meaning. It can also leave the meaning unresolved. The analysis is strongest when it states what changed, what remained, whose interpretation is being reported, and whether that interpretation developed during the event or afterwards.
