'''Indra and the parade of ants''' is a story [[Joseph Campbell]] tells in “The Message of the Myth”, the second episode of ''The Power of Myth''. A god's pride in his achievement is unsettled by an encounter with a scale of time far larger than his own reign.<ref name="pom2">Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers, [https://billmoyers.com/content/ep-2-joseph-campbell-and-the-power-of-myth-the-message-of-the-myth/ “The Message of the Myth”], ''The Power of Myth'' (1988), published transcript, story of Indra's palace and the ants.</ref>

This page follows Campbell's spoken retelling rather than presenting a translation of a Sanskrit source. The story offers several related images: blocked and released waters, an endlessly enlarged palace, innumerable worlds, former rulers appearing as ants, and a return to ordinary responsibilities.

== The story in brief ==
After defeating Vritra and releasing the waters, Indra commissions a magnificent palace. His continually expanding demands overwhelm the divine builder Vishvakarman, who seeks help. A mysterious boy visits and speaks of countless previous Indras. An approaching line of ants becomes the decisive illustration: the boy identifies them as former holders of Indra's exalted position. Indra abandons the building project and considers withdrawing from worldly life. A further intervention leads him to resume his responsibilities with a changed understanding of his place.<ref name="pom2" />

The final movement matters. The story does not stop at humiliation or withdrawal. A loss of exaggerated importance is followed by renewed participation.

== Expansion without completion ==
The palace project turns achievement into a demand for ever greater recognition. Every stage creates the occasion for a larger requirement. The builder cannot finish because the measure of sufficiency changes whenever Indra sees what has been made.

This produces a distinctive form of being stuck. Activity continues, resources are consumed and the structure grows, yet completion recedes. The obstruction is not an inability to build. It is the absence of a stable relationship between the work and an attainable end.

The image can illuminate an invented workplace example: a report is repeatedly enlarged because its sponsor wants it to demonstrate the importance of the department. Additional pages may improve it, but they may also postpone the moment when it can be judged sufficient. The comparison becomes useful when the moving requirement can be identified, rather than when ambition is merely condemned.

== A change of scale ==
The visiting boy changes the frame in which Indra evaluates himself. A unique achievement becomes one episode within a much larger succession. The story makes this conceptual change visible through beings that can cross a palace floor unnoticed.

The ants are effective because they combine small size with collective movement. What Indra regards as incomparable is represented as numerous and passing. The contrast is relational: a throne establishes one kind of scale, while the procession supplies another.

The narrative's vast cycles should be described as mythic cosmology. Campbell's telling is not an astronomical measurement, and its numbers need not be converted into claims about the age or physical arrangement of the universe to explain the scene.

== Pride, insignificance and proportion ==
There are three positions to distinguish:

<div class="mom-table-scroll" role="region" aria-label="Indra and the Parade of Ants: Pride, insignificance and proportion (table 1)" tabindex="0" style="max-width:100%;overflow-x:auto;">
{| class="wikitable"
! scope="col" | Position !! scope="col" | Relation to the larger setting !! scope="col" | Narrative consequence
|-
| Exaggerated importance || My achievement should determine the scale of everything || The palace cannot become grand enough
|-
| Collapse of importance || My achievement is temporary, so participation appears pointless || Indra considers withdrawal
|-
| Proportionate participation || My position is temporary, but its responsibilities remain real || Indra returns to his role
|}
</div>

The third position prevents the story from becoming a simple argument that nothing matters. Temporariness and worthlessness are different claims. A role may matter to those affected by it even when its holder is replaceable and its duration limited.

== The builder's perspective ==
Vishvakarman's difficulty introduces a perspective that Indra initially overlooks. The ruler experiences expanding ambition; the builder experiences an assignment without an end. Their positions within the same project are unequal.

Reading the story through the builder makes its social relationships more visible. A grand vision can depend on another person's continuing labour. The question of scale therefore concerns not only a ruler's self-image but also the conditions imposed on those carrying out the work.

The builder seeks an intervention rather than simply trying harder. That detail distinguishes a problem with the task's governing requirements from a problem with the worker's skill.

== Return and responsibility ==
Campbell uses the conclusion to discuss participation in worldly life with an awareness that exceeds an individual role.<ref name="pom2" /> In the narrative, renewed participation follows a double correction: Indra relinquishes both limitless self-aggrandisement and the impulse to abandon his position entirely.

For metaphor analysis, the most useful feature is this movement between frames. The palace is first the centre of an apparently incomparable achievement, then a small event within immense time, and finally a setting in which responsibilities can be carried out. The physical world has not disappeared; its relationship to the protagonist's self-understanding has changed.
