'''Echoes, silence and unheard voices''' connect sound with distance, response and recognition. A voice can be present without reaching someone. A sound can return without another person replying. Silence may describe a quiet environment, an interval in conversation or a response that never comes.

== Background ==
An echo involves reflected sound. NOAA's explanation of active sonar gives a clear example: a device emits a sound pulse, an object reflects it, and the returning signal provides information about what is in the water. Passive sonar, by contrast, listens without emitting that pulse.<ref>NOAA National Ocean Service, [https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/sonar.html “What is sonar?”].</ref>

This distinction helps separate calling, listening and receiving a return. In figurative language, an “echo” may be a repetition of another person's words or a reminder of an earlier event. The resemblance can be meaningful even though no physical reflection is involved.

“Unheard” also needs context. A speaker may be too far away, masked by other sounds, ignored by an audience, or understood without being taken seriously. Those descriptions concern different obstacles.

== Comparing the images ==
{| class="wikitable"
! Image !! What occurs !! What should not be assumed
|-
| Echo || A sound or phrase comes back || A return is not necessarily an independent answer.
|-
| Silence || An expected or noticeable sound is absent || Absence of speech does not by itself establish agreement or refusal.
|-
| Drowned-out voice || Another sound masks a voice || The speaker may still be speaking.
|-
| Whisper || A voice is quiet and usually heard over a short distance || Quietness does not establish the importance of the message.
|-
| Chorus || Several voices sound together || Similar words may come from several speakers with different reasons.
|-
| Listening || Attention is directed towards a possible sound or speaker || Hearing, understanding and acting are separate events.

== Examples in literature and culture ==
=== Echo in Ovid ===
In Book III of Ovid's ''Metamorphoses'', Juno restricts Echo's speech so that she can repeat the end of someone else's words but cannot begin a conversation. Echo's exchanges with Narcissus therefore resemble dialogue while denying her the freedom to initiate it. Later, her body wastes away and her voice remains.<ref>Ovid, [https://www.gutenberg.org/files/21765/21765-h/21765-h.htm ''Metamorphoses''], Book III, Echo and Narcissus, translated by Henry T. Riley.</ref>

For comparison, the story distinguishes having a voice from choosing what to say. It also gives the returning sound a speaker and a history. That is a literary construction, different from the physical account of an echo.

=== Sounding a depth ===
Active sonar turns a returning sound into evidence about distance. In language, “sounding someone out” similarly suggests making an approach and attending to the response. The comparison concerns an exchange of signal and return, not a claim that conversation follows the same rules as measurement.

== Idioms and expressions ==
* '''Fall on deaf ears:''' receive no apparent attention or response.
* '''Find one's voice:''' begin expressing oneself confidently or distinctly.
* '''A voice in the wilderness:''' an opinion expressed with little support or attention.
* '''Deafening silence:''' a conspicuous absence of an expected response.
* '''Strike a chord:''' evoke recognition or feeling.
* '''Echo someone's words:''' repeat or closely resemble what they have said.
These expressions describe conventional usage; they should not be taken as literal statements about hearing ability.
