View source for Myth as Metaphor: Joseph Campbell's Approach

Myth as metaphor is a way of reading mythic images and narratives as expressions of experience, rather than treating their significance as exhausted by whether the narrated events occurred literally. Joseph Campbell made this approach central to his interpretation of mythology, art and psychological life. It is an interpretive position, not a demonstration that every tradition understands its own stories in the same way.

Campbell's published reflections connect recurring mythic figures with fantasy, dreams and the possibilities of human experience. An authorised excerpt from The Ecstasy of Being presents this connection particularly clearly, while also displaying the breadth of his claims about cross cultural recurrence. These are useful starting points; an excerpt or audio lecture should not be represented as a freely available complete edition of one of his books.

Video
In this February 1987 interview from Thinking Allowed, Campbell discusses his understanding of mythology and its place in culture. The Joseph Campbell Foundation's release provides a primary recording to compare with the interpretations outlined in this article.
